Title: Creating and posting slideshows

Overview and Rationale:
Today’s readers want to images of events, especially online. Learning to create and upload slideshows as an alternative story form will give readers what they are looking for, and enhance the readership of The Hornet’s Buzz.

Goals for Understanding
Essential Questions:
• How do we tell more engaging stories?
• Critical Engagement Questions
• What do compelling images look like?
• Where can we use images instead of text?
• Why is it important to tell stories in a visual medium?

Overviews and Timeline:

Activity 1 (One 90-minute class)

(45 minutes) Students will be put into 3-person teams by the teacher by counting off. Teams will meet and each member will look at one student news website for examples of photo slideshows or galleries. Websites to be used:
·       FHNToday.com: Photo galleries URL: http://fhntoday.com/category/photos-2/
·       The Kirkwood Call: Photo galleries URL: http://www.thekirkwoodcall.com/category/photo-galleries/
·       The Shawnee Mission East Harbinger Online: Photo galleries URL: http://smeharbinger.net/category/photos

Students will take notes over different galleries they examine:
·       What do they like?
·       What don’t they like?
·       Are there captions?
·       Where do they appear?
·       Is there audio?
·       What types of events/stories are covered?
·       What stories would you like to cover?

(45 minutes) Each student in each group will choose one slideshow to share with the rest of the group, and will share their thoughts. Each group will then brainstorm to come up with an idea for a slideshow story. The event for this idea should take place during class time, as students will have half of the class today to go take pictures.  Groups will write a short proposal of their idea, check out cameras, and go shoot the event or class. Shooting should be complete by the start of the next class (we are on a block schedule, so it will be the day after tomorrow).

Activity 2 (One 90-minute class)

(10 minutes) View the Camtasia video on how to use Picasa. Take notes.

(80 minutes) Students will get back into groups, and upload their photos to the “Shared Drive.” Each student should have taken photos. Students will each choose 10 photos for inclusion in their own slideshow. Students will edit photos (they will have gone through a photography and editing lesson in a previous unit), and save them in a folder with their own last name and slideshow (ex.: lastname_slideshow).

Assessment (One 90-minute class)

Each student will create their own 10-photo slideshow in Picasa. Students will have access to view the Camtasia presentation over how to use Picasa, as well as a “How to” handout. Students will post the finished product to www.northtownnews.com, using their existing login information. Slideshows will be posted to the “Photos” section. Each slideshow will be graded based off of the rubric provided to students on Day 1. If students do not have enough time to complete this in class, it is due by the beginning of next class.
